What’s A Two Sided Printer?
An on-going responsibility in any business is for employees to constantly to be on the lookout for new methods of doing things differently that can save their organization time and money. At times, we are all caught up in the old syndrome in which we are reluctant to think outside the box because “we have always done it that way” or we honestly believe that what we are doing right now is perfect and there is no need to change it.
Let me tell you about one of my business acquaintances, James, and how a new idea he presented to his company earned him a $2,500.00 bonus and a chance for a significant promotion.
James has been a supervisor in the shipping department of a large hard goods manufacturer in the mid-west. His company ships thousands of goods every week through UPS and other shipping companies. The shipping process that they were using for years was to print out a shipping label for each box on a large thermal barcode label printer. The next step was to then have one of their workers print out a packing slip on either a laser printer or on a dot-matrix printer located in the shipping department. The shipping label was then applied to the box and the packing list was placed in an orange sleeve, the backing was pulled off the sleeve, and then it was applied to the shipping container. With the pressure sensitive adhesive on the back of the sleeve, the packing list was supposed to be safe. Every shipment required both of these operations.
There were two problems the company was facing. The first was that they needed to cut the average cost to ship a container, and second they would often get a phone call from a customer informing them that a packing slip was missing from the outside of the container. This cost both their customer and themselves valuable time. In some cases, their customer sent the goods back to them, costing James’ company thousands of dollars each time this occurred, to pay for the return shipping charges, as well as all the administrative functions that needed to be taken care of in his company. The only explanation for the packing list missing was that during the shipping process, the backing slip sleeve was torn off.
One day while James was reading a logistics magazine, he came across an article on a very unique printer. It appeared that this unique device could eliminate printing separate packing slips on their laser or dot-matrix printers, while still giving their customers the packing list information that they needed, and at the same time, eliminate their problem of lost packing slips.
James immediately called his local printer company and asked for a ten day evaluation unit to be sent to his company. After using the printer for the ten days, there was no doubt this was the device that they were going to use in the future.
