If you are price shopping for the lowest cost label, you might want to dial it up! Those cheaper labels could actually end up costing you much more money.
Be sure that you are not using low grade label paper if you are using direct thermal printers. This is especially true in higher end thermal label printers such as Zebra , Printronix , SATO , Datamax-O'Neil , Intermec. TSC , and more.
Direct thermal printers are those printers that do not use ribbons. The labels are chemically treated so that when heat is applied by the printhead , a character is printed.
Often bargain priced rolls of paper are really not a “bargain”. Why?
Answer: Because low grade paper is often coarser and can cause more wear on the printheads.
We have seen situations with even as high as 50% more wear on the printhead. As you know, printheads in most thermal label printers are expensive, sometimes running as much as $650.00 each. It may make sense to pay a little more for the paper, as it is a fraction of the cost compared to replacing printheads more often and experiencing more unproductive downtime.
